چکیده

Background and Purpose The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the magnetic resonance features of intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissections and to determine the potential and limitations of magnetic resonance imaging in their diagnosis. Methods We studied five consecutive patients with angiographically verified intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissection with magnetic resonance imaging (0.5 T) in regard to the shapes of the intramural hematoma and the chronological change of its signal intensity. We also estimated the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosing dissection. Results We observed intramural hematoma in four patients on the first magnetic resonance scan and in all five patients during the course of the study. The shapes of the intramural hematomas were curvilinear, crescentic, "bamboo-cut," "bandlike," and spotty. The intensity of the intramural hematoma

Clinical and neuroradiological features of intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We sought to determine the clinical and neuroradiological features of intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissection. METHODS The clinical features and MR findings of 31 patients (20 men and 11 women) with intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissections confirmed by vertebral angiography were analyzed retrospectively. The vertebral angiography revealed the double lumen ...

Familial association of intracranial aneurysms and cervical artery dissections.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The familial occurrence of intracranial aneurysms and cervical artery dissections has been described in different families and supports the hypothesis that a primary arteriopathy may play a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Although the basis for this arteriopathy is generally not believed to be similar among cases of intracranial aneurysms and cervical artery ...

Dissection of the posterior cerebral arteries.

M ost reported arterial dissections involve the carotid and vertebral arteries in the neck. Within the intracranial arteries, dissections most often involve the vertebral and basilar arteries. Intracranial carotid and middle cerebral artery dissections occur much more rarely and seem to develop in younger individuals compared with patients who develop posterior-circulation intracranial dissecti...

Anticoagulation in cerebral ischemia associated with intracranial artery dissections is safe, but is it enough to recommend it?

See related article, pages 1837–1842. In most textbooks, intracranial artery dissections are considered rare, difficult to diagnose, and associated with a high risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).1 Three different clinical presentations are described: (1) cerebral ischemia, when the mural hematoma remains subintimal, ie, located between the media and the elastica interna, leading to vessel st...

Imaging of the intracranial vertebrobasilar system using color-coded ultrasound.

BACKGROUND Anatomic variety and difficult accessibility of the vertebrobasilar arteries pose considerable problems to conventional ultrasound. We evaluated the diagnostic potential of transcranial color-coded sonography in the distal part of this system. METHODS We insonated the intracranial section of the vertebrobasilar arteries through the foramen magnum window in 24 healthy individuals us...
